Post Operative Breast Massage

Dr. Stile: Hello! If you're watching this video, you're either preparing to have your cosmetic breast augmentation procedure, or you've recently had your surgery. Consistently and correctly taking care of your newly-enlarged breasts is just as important as the actual surgery. I've produced this video specifically for my patients, to ensure that they have a complete and accurate understanding of breast massage following breast augmentation surgery. Unless otherwise instructed, breast massage should begin at five days following your procedure. Each breast should be massaged using the following techniques for two minutes, three times per day. At one week, you will begin by using your right hand to support your left breast. Then using your left hand and fingertips, you'll massage the upper pole of your breast, starting in the mid-chest in a deep, circular fashion, proceeding to the outer breast. You'll repeat this technique using your left hand to support your right breast. Then using your right hand and fingertips, you'll massage the upper pole of the breast, starting once again in the mid-chest and proceeding in a deep, circular fashion to the outer portion of your right breast. At week two, or 14 days following your procedure, the previous technique is repeated. Once again using your right hand to support your left breast, and again, you'll massage the upper pole of your breast, starting at the mid-chest in a deep, circular fashion, proceeding to the outer part of your breast. Next, you'll use both hands and fingers to massage the left breast, using a kneading motion, firmly compressing the implant medially, laterally, upwards, and downwards in the breast pocket. You'll repeat this technique using your left hand to support the right breast. Once again, using the right hand and fingertips, you'll massage the upper part of your right breast, starting at the mid-chest, in a deep, circular fashion, proceeding to the outer breast. Next, again, you'll use both hands and fingers to massage the right breast, using a kneading technique once again, compressing the implant firmly medially, laterally, upwards, and downwards in the breast pocket. It sometimes helps to think of a clock and massage in a clockwise manner, to ensure that you don't lose your place and massage the breast completely. At one month post-op, breast massage can be done one time per day for two minutes. This will ensure the optimal softness of your implants in your breasts. Many patients choose to do this while the shower, in conjunction with a self breast exam. If you note any changes in the firmness or appearance of your breasts, please contact me for a follow-up evaluation. I hope that this video was helpful, and I look forward to seeing you at your next exam. Thank you.
